I’ve heard that fly-ash contains lead. Why are you using it in your countertops?
Squak Mountain Stone™ no longer contains fly-ash. There are still any number of references out on the Web and in magazines that mention this ingredient, but we discontinued its use in Spring 2009. We now use 100% recycled glass in its place.
Will my slabs look like my sample?
No. Your samples are for you to use to help in choosing the right color of material. In areas where Squak Mountain Stone is stocked, you should go look at full-sized slabs before deciding. The photos here can help paint a picture for you on the natural variablity Squak Mountain Stone exhibits also.
There’s a colored spot in the middle of my countertops. What is that?
Just like the letters or words popping up, our un-processed paper can also included some colored stock. If you dislike its appearance, the use of a dilute bleach solution, kept wet for an hour or two, will remove or minimize it. Because we use very stable mineral pigments, the bleach won’t change the color of the countertop.
I found a tiny piece of paper on the surface of my slab and could actually see a few letters. Is this normal?
Yes! TMI does not chemically process the mixed waste paper before mixing it into Squak Mountain Stone™. This means that occasionally paper (white or colored) and words can be seen in the product. We can’t control how much or how little this happens. In fact, one slab TMI manufactured actually had a small piece of paper on the surface near the edge that read “Do something beautiful.” We wish we could take credit for that happening the way it did but we can’t. And although we do respect freedom of speech, we will try to make sure some profanity doesn’t end up on your kitchen or bathroom countertop for your kids to read! Also, don’t be shocked if you find something small, shiny and metal: Its probably just a staple!
